Biography Fukazawa, Sakuichi (1896 - 1947)

Sakuichi Fukazawa was born in Niigata Prefecture; his parents moved to Tokyo when he was still young, and there he attended the Central School of Commerce and Industry. In 1918 he began making woodblock prints under the guidance of Kanenori Suwa. In 1922 he had his first exhibition with the Nihon Sôsaku-Hanga Kyôkai. Thereafter he contributed to numerous Hanga magazines. That he was held in high regard by his contemporaries is proved by the fact that he contributed 13 prints to the important series One hundred views of new Tokyo - Shin Tokyo hyakkei, which was published between 1929 and 1932. After his death in 1947 a commemorative exhibition of his work was organized. His style is characterized by its soft, lithographic quality, achieved by the use of a round knife and very shallow carving.
